12 Strange Words to Add to your Vocabulary this NaNoWriMo
The English language can be described in any number of ways: incredibly frustrating, full of strange words and contradictions, beautiful and poetic, rhythmic, and just plain weird. However you describe it, it certainly seems never-ending. There are so many words with so many meanings and it seems impossible to know them all. But in chasing what seems like an impossible endeavour, here are a few more strange words to add to your vocabulary. Maybe you can use them during NaNoWriMo this year! (Check out our post from earlier this week on how to prepare for NaNoWriMo)
Some of these strange words you may have seen before, but we’re certain there are some you will have never heard of before! So, have a read through and maybe try and use some of our words in a sentence (or a story – it is NaNoWriMo after all)! One – Fanfaronade:
noun bragging; bravado; bluster.
Two – Fatuous:
adjective foolish, especially in an unconscious, complacent manner; silly.
Three – Gerful:
adjective changeable, impulsive; wild and wayward.
Four – Indomitable:
adjective that cannot be subdued or overcome.
Five – Infandous:
adjective unspeakable, too odious to mention.
Six – Luciferous:
adjective bringing or giving light.
Seven – Mendacity:
noun the tendency to lie; untruthfulness.
Eight – Nyctophilia:
noun love of darkness, night; finding comfort in the darkness.
Nine – Ostentiferous:
adjective bringing omens or unnatural or supernatural manifestations.
Ten – Scripturient:
adjective possessing a violent desire to write.
Eleven – Selcouth:
adjective unfamiliar, rare, strange, and yet marvelous, wondrous.
Twelve – Zugzwang:
noun the requirement of a disadvantageous move. A situation where every possible move is a bad one.
